UN atomic energy agency develops flying drone to scan radiation-hit Fukushima
Vienna, Austria
– Two years after the nuclear disaster that released high levels of radiation
over Fukushima Prefecture
in Japan,
the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of the United Nations (UN) introduced
a prototype unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that could monitor radiation levels
in the Japanese prefecture.
The UAV, or more commonly
known as a “drone,” is a remote-controlled, aerial vehicle with a mounted
camera on board that could be “deployed to monitor hard to reach areas where
the level of contamination is unknown, and to establish whether you can
actually send in people," said IAEA section head Ralf Bernd Kaiser.
