UN atomic energy agency develops flying drone to scan radiation-hit Fukushima


Vienna, Austria – Two years after the nuclear disaster that released high levels of radiation over Fukushima Prefecture in Japan, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of the United Nations (UN) introduced a prototype unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that could monitor radiation levels in the Japanese prefecture.
The UAV, or more commonly known as a “drone,” is a remote-controlled, aerial vehicle with a mounted camera on board that could be “deployed to monitor hard to reach areas where the level of contamination is unknown, and to establish whether you can actually send in people," said IAEA section head Ralf Bernd Kaiser.
