apl.de.ap returns to Sendong’s
ground zero to fulfil promise in CDO

Last December, in the wake of Typhoon Sendong, Filipino-American rapper, apl.de.ap visited Cagayan de Oro to see the magnitude of the calamity first-hand. Coming upon a ravaged Balulang Elementary School, he vowed to rebuild its damaged classrooms.

Nine months later, he revisited Balulang to fulfil his promise.

On September 25, he inaugurated the newly-constructed school building, made possible by funds raised through the “We Can Be Anything” (WCBA) campaign. A partnership between the apl.de.ap. Foundation and the Ninoy and Cory Aquino Foundation, WCBA is also being supported by PLDT Smart Foundation, One Meralco Foundation and Philippine Airlines.

After the blessing of the four-classroom building, the celebrity from the world-famous Black Eyed Peas gave the Balulang students an inspiring message: “Don’t give up, study hard. Your teacher is the rock star; listen to your teachers. Continue to dream.”

Following the ceremony, apl proceeded to Iponan Elementary School, which was built under the auspices of the Aruga tungo sa Pag-angat at Pag-asa Foundation (AGAPP) through its “Silid Pangarap Project”. The funding for Iponan Elementary School was made possible as apl, an endorser of San Miguel Corporation, asked for the company’s assistance in this project. This is part of his fundraising efforts to build as many schools under the “We Can Be Anything” (WCBA) Campaign.

Both classroom building initiatives are part of Bayanihang Pampaaralan, the consolidated private sector endeavour to accelerate the construction of 10,000 public school classrooms, under the management of the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP).

About the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP)

The Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) was founded in 1970 by 50 captains of industry who shared a common vision of reducing poverty through various social development programs. Today, the PBSP has evolved into the largest corporate-led social development foundation in the Philippines. It also has the distinction of being the first of its kind in Asia advancing initiatives and best practices of corporate social responsibility (CSR).

240 large, medium-scale and small business companies comprise the PBSP. United in a common cause, PBSP members uplift the lives of Filipinos through social development projects and green agendas. Since its founding in 1970, PBSP has efficiently managed PhP 5.5 billion in grants. The United Nations (UN) has tapped PBSP to encourage business sector support in meeting the challenges of the Millennium Development Goals Program (MDG). PBSP also manages the multi-billion Peso - Global Fund in support of the National TB program of the Department of Health.

Leading the way in the theory and practice of good corporate citizenship, PBSP has been influencing the Filipino business community to integrate CSR into their core businesses and advocating the strategy that collective engagements can lead to more sustainable impact. PBSP’s Platforms for Collective Engagements (PlaCEs) scales up individual initiatives through collective impact strategies focused on four clusters: Health, Education, Environment, and Livelihood and Enterprise Development.
