Press Release on Women

Women’s groups join hands to push Justice and Healing approach on Violence Against Women

Coinciding with the Philippines’ 18-day campaign to end violence against women (VAW), Women’s Feature Service (WFS) Philippines hosted an end-of-project forum entitled ‘Blazing Paths for Justice and Healing for Survivors of Gender-based Violence’ held at the Tropics Room, Bayview Park Hotel Manila last November 28, 2012.

The forum gathered leading advocates against gender-based violence, as well as representatives from non-government organizations, government agencies, help centers, and the media from different parts of the Philippines, to discuss the Justice and Healing approach and how it can be done in their own localities.

Presentations were made by WFS Executive Director Olivia Tripon who introduced and gave an overview of the project. Women’s Crisis Center (WCC) consultant Theresa Balayon also made a presentation on the Justice and Healing approaches while Women’s Legal Education, Advocacy, and Defense Foundation’s (WomenLead) former Executive Director Atty. Claire Luczon talked about the healing potential of the justice system.

Responses were given by Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) Executive Director Emmeline Verzosa and Gabriela Party-list Representative Emmi de Jesus. Provincial participants -- Project Area Coordinators, local LGU and NGO partners shared their experiences and good practices as well as  suggestions and comments on how they can enrich the Justice and Healing approach in their respective provinces.

European Union Programme Officer Margarito Raynera gave the closing remarks and said the EU will always be supportive of programs and initiatives that promote human rights in the country.
The Justice and Healing project seeks to strengthen the components of the justice system to deliver rights-based and gender-sensitive services using the Justice and Healing perspective with respect to the VAW cases. The project ran for two years and ended this November 2012.
