Government to Promote IT-BPO Industry to upcoming Next Wave Cities

The Information and Communications Technology Office of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-ICTO) will be embarking on a road show to promote the Information Technology Business Process Outsourcing Industry (IT-BPO) to cities outside Metro Manila considered to be Next Wave Cities (NWCs).

Next Wave Cities are locations outside the National Capital Region and Metro Cebu that have excellent potential as IT-BPO investment and employment locations. The road show which will visit nine locations over a span of four months aims to promote the Industry and employment opportunities for graduates as well as dispel some of the misconceptions about being employed in the IT-BPO industry in order to drive up applications.

The events are also intended to initially introduce the Smarter City/Countryside concept through the use of ICT as a tool for social and economic development as well as create partnerships with the private and public sector by providing job opportunities and trainings to students and graduates that can be employed in the IT- BPO Industry.

DOST-ICTO Deputy Executive Director for Industry Development Mr. Alejandro Melchor said that; “There is a need to spread the benefits of economic growth across to other regions and cities while easing the congestion in NCR and in other high-density IT-BPO locations. Helping the IT-BPO industry move to graduate-rich but less IT-BPO–congested locations would result to a more balanced development across the country.”

The road show will kick-off in Legaspi City on 23-24 August and will also be held at the following locations; Palayan City (7 Sept.), Tagbilaran (13 Sept.), Zamboanga 28-29 Sept.), Malolos (4-5 Oct.), Clark Special Economic Zone (10-11 Oct), Bacolod (15-16 Oct), Cavite (25-26 Oct.), and Davao (9-10 Nov.).
