SM Hypermarket relives the bayanihan spirit
SM Hypermarket, a one-stop shop for the whole family’s shopping needs, relives the bayanihan tradition, with the launch of a project that depicts the cooperative effort of helping out one’s neighbor.

Called "Baryanihan" –a combination of "barya" (coins) and "bayanihan" (the community spirit) – this project enjoins shoppers to voluntarily donate their loose change for a community effort in the vicinity where SM Hypermarket operates.

Upon checkout, cashiers ask shoppers if they would like to donate their loose change to Baryanihan for the benefit of a specific organization within the local community. An official receipt is issued to every shopper who donates to make sure that all donations are accounted for and assure donors of the project’s legitimacy.
Three months since its rollout, shoppers have been very supportive of the cause. “Almost forty percent of our total cash transactions have donated and some generous shoppers would even give more than the amount of their loose change,” says SM Hypermarket vice president for Operations Arnold Daluz.

The money that will be raised from Baryanihan after six months of implementation will be used to buy the most essential needs of thirty different beneficiaries of SM Hypermarket branches –  Adriatico’s Our Lady of Assumption Parish; Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Baclaran; Simbahan ng Kristo ng Muling Pagkabuhay in Valenzuela; Our Lady of Hope Parish in Quezon City; Our Lady of Sacred Heart Jesus Parish in Cavite; San Agustine Church in Baliwag; Tahanang Walang Hagdan in Cainta; Bgy. The turnover of in-kind donations including electric fans for schools and churches,  tables and chairs for senior citizens’ recreation, school supplies and slippers for students, nourishment for day care centers’ children, mattresses for DSWD Youth Houses; donations for repainting of school buildings and old churches, clean up drives and street lighting, among others – will happen some time in October and November, aptly as a pre-Holiday present of SM Hypermarket to its local communities.

With Baryanihan and the support of its millions of shoppers, SM Hypermarket continues to give back to the communities and help those in need.
