Manila, Philippines – Transportation Secretary Manuel Roxas ordered on June 22, 2012, the suspension of the train driver of the Philippine National Railways in the train accident in Iriga City, Camarines Sur, Friday morning where Mayon Ltd., an ordinary PNR train bound for Ligao, Albay hit a tricycle.

The PNR train was three kilometers away from Iriga station at decelerating speed of 35 to 30kph when the accident happened at Zone 1, San Isidro, Iriga City.

At 6:54am, an obstruction appeared on the track which compelled the train driver to continuously blow horn and apply full brakes. Despite these, the train hit the obstruction which turned out to be an overloaded tricycle with 17 passengers.

The tricycle driver persisted in crossing the track despite warnings from residents and bystanders to stop because a train was approaching.  It tried to beat the train resulting in the accident.

The incident happened in an illegal railroad crossing and not among the 256 authorized and planned railroad crossings operated by the Philippine National Railways (PNR).

The authorized PNR crossings are equipped with standard barrier and signage. Also, PNR drivers are trained to slow down and to be on the lookout in passing these authorized railroad crossings.  At speed of 35kph, it will take 1km for the train to come to a full stop.

“We commiserate with the families of the victims for the unnecessary lost of lives and injuries. Tragic as it is, it was totally preventable had extra caution been exercised,” Roxas said.

The reckless tricycle driver was also wearing earphones when the accident occurred

Constancio Toledano, PNR Bicol regional district manager said one teacher and two students were killed on the spot while three others, including the driver, who were in critical condition, died in the hospital.
