UP Diliman holds biodiversity, genomics symposium

The Office of the Vice-President for Academic Affairs is holding its 4th research symposium on June 14, 2012, Thursday, 8am-1pm, at the Auditorium of the National Institute of Physics in the National Science Complex, UP Diliman.


In cooperation with the Philippine Genome Center (PGC), the symposium “Biodiversity and Genomics” will have distinguished professors as guest presenters including Baldomero Olivera, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of Biology from University of Utah who will talk about molecular genetics and genomics to investigate the biodiversity of venomous Philippine mollusks.

Other international guest speakers include Drs. Sarah Bush and Mark Yandell from University of Utah, Dr. Rafe Brown from University of Kansas, Dr. Margo Haygood from Oregon Health and Science University and Dr. Richard Sucgang from Baylor College of Medicine. Assistant professors Jonas Quilang, Ph.D. and Ian Kendrich Fontanilla, Ph.D. from UP Institute of Biology will also join the panel of speakers.

Vice President for Academic Affairs and Biodiversity Program Director of Philippine Genome Center Dr. Gisela P. Concepcion shares “it is going to be a great venue to share significant discoveries that can benefit Filipinos; aside from presentations of scientific knowledge/facts, it will also promote a dialogue, an exchange of views during the open forum.”

PGC Executive Director Carmencita Padilla said PGC has 2 core facilities - DNA sequencing and bioinformatics. Research focuses on 5 program areas i.e. health, agriculture, biodiversity and drug discovery, forensics & ethnicity and ethics, legal and social issues.
