ALAY KULAY:
Sining Handog sa Kapwa at
Kalikasan
The onslaught of Typhoon Gener has
devastated many parts of the Southern Tagalog region. The National Disaster
Risk Reduction and Management Council reports that 37,000 families or 180,000
people in the region were affected by Typhoon Gener.
Still beginning to recuperate from the
devastation left by the typhoon, torrential rains caused by the southwest
monsoon (Habagat) further afflicted Southern Tagalog communities, particularly,
those along the coastal areas and the riverside. This has increased the number
of flood victims to 76,000 families, mostly from the provinces of Laguna,
Rizal, and some parts of Cavite and Batangas. Relief operations, medical
missions, and feeding programs set for the victims of Typhoon Gener had to be
extended and expanded to accommodate communities now suffering the brunt of the
resulting deluge.
“ALAY KULAY: Sining Handog sa Kapwa at
Kalikasan”, an art exhibit for the benefit of Habagat victims in Southern
Tagalog, was conceptualized when a group of visual artists based in Batangas
approached Southern Tagalog Serve the People Corps (STP Corps) and Kalikasan
Partylist Southern Tagalog (Kalikasan-ST) during one of its relief missions in
the province. Jen Romulo, one of the artists mentioned other artists who are willing
to sell their workS, pledging to donate part of the proceeds to the operations
of STP Corps and Kalikasan-ST.
Soon enough, Southern Tagalog cultural
organizations, Artists’ Arrest and Southern Tagalog eXposure, and the
Redemptorist Seminary, are helping out to organize and co-sponsor the art
exhibit as more artists continue to express their interest in joining the
cause.
