NML gets accredited anew

If being ISO-certified is already a good thing, being declared competent by a foreign accreditation authority makes things even more prestigious for DOST’s Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI).

In 2010, ITDI’s National Metrology Laboratory of the Philippines (NML) earned its DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025: 2005 Accreditation, also known as “General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories”, from Germany’s national accreditation body, Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH (DAkkS) in the fields of mass, temperature, and pressure. This year, NML gained another milestone as DAkkS also awarded the Laboratory for its proven competency in electrical measurements.

Getting one institution ISO-accredited involves quite an extensive assessment of its standards, calibration procedures, and equipment, ensuring that everything is reliable and accurate. Thankfully the Laboratory passed the competency assessment phase with flying colors, thus assuring users of top-of-the-line service and dependability of ITDI’s calibration services.

The Laboratory, led by its Chief, Ms. Aurora V. Kimura, is the Philippines’ government authority in the field of metrology. And with the DAkkS accreditation in place, its Calibration Certificates and the calibrated equipment of customers can now sport the distinct DAkkS logo and registration codes – marks of utmost quality, reliability, and international traceability. Having a locally available and accredited calibration service also provides local industries the convenience of no longer having to send their equipment to other countries to be calibrated, thus saving on transport and other related fees, as well as the turnover time.

NML is the authority in establishing and maintaining national physical standards for basic and derived quantities such as mass, length, temperature, time interval, voltage, and resistance throughout the country. These national standards are also periodically calibrated by other countries’ national metrology institutes so as to guarantee international traceability.

NML has ten (10) calibration laboratories – Mass, Force, Pressure, Length, Electricity and Frequency, Temperature, Hygrometry, Photometry, Density, and Volume – and offers measurement services in these areas.

Located within the DOST compound in Taguig City, NML presently exists as the laboratory arm of ITDI tasked to carry out the technical calibration and laboratory functions to effectively implement the provisions of the National Metrology Act of 2003, otherwise known as RA 9236. It also offers calibration proficiency testing through inter-laboratory comparisons, trainings, and consultancies.
