“Training and Capacity Building Programme on Seismic Strengthening for Master Trainers and Local Builders in Luzon and the Visayas, Philippines”
The Temasek Foundation through the
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) of Singapore has committed funds and
technical cooperation to the University of the Philippines (UP) to jointly
train a total of 60 faculty members, postgraduate students, government
officials, and engineers as “master trainers” on seismic strengthening of
school buildings.
The training program entitled,
“Training and Capacity Building Programme on Seismic Strengthening for Master
Trainers and Local Builders in Luzon and the Visayas, Philippines,” aims to
promote good construction practices and impart earthquake engineering
strengthening techniques to participants representing these two regions.
Specifically, the program will train them to become Master Trainers who will
then train a total of 240 local builders in the strengthening and retrofitting
of public school buildings to be identified in the regions.
The Luzon run of this very timely and
relevant training program will be held on 30 July to 3 August 2012 at the Audio
Visual Room of the UP National Engineering Center, Juinio Hall, UP Diliman,
Quezon City.
Specialists from NTU will fly in to
Manila to join the pool of resource persons of the training. They are Prof. Li Bing, Director of the
Natural Hazard Research Centre of NTU; Prof. Chiew Sing Ping, Head of the
Division of Structures and Mechanics of NTU; and Dr. Huang Yin Nan, Assistant
Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering, National Taiwan University.
They will be joined by local experts
namely; Dr. Benito M. Pacheco, Project Manager of this Training Program and
currently the UP Diliman Vice Chancellor for Research and Development; Dr.
Jaime Y. Hernandez Jr., Head of the Structural Engineering Group of the UP
Institute of Civil Engineering (UP ICE); Dr. Fernando J. Germar, Associate
Professor of the UP ICE; Engr. Luis G. Purisima Jr., Assistant Chief of the
Physical Facilities and Schools’ Engineering Division of the Department of
Education; Seismologist Mr. Henremagne Penarubia of PHIVOLCS; Engr. Wilfredo
Lopez, Chief of the Structural Division, Bureau of Design of DPWH; and Engr. Ronaldo S. Ison and Engr. Frederick
Sison who are both officers of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers.
An inaugural function will be held at
9:00 am on 30 July at the UP NEC’s Audio Visual Room. This will be followed by a press conference
at 12:00 noon at the Executive Board Room. The valedictory function and
distribution of participants’ certificates will be on 3 August 2012 at 6:00
p.m. at a venue to be announced later.
The Luzon run of the training program
is being held in July as the country celebrates the National Disaster
Consciousness Month as promulgated by Executive Order No. 137.
